overview. Beginning with a close study of the human figure, the decomposition and recomposition, systemising of human proportions, was the first encounter with the concept of abstraction. Thinking through the hand became the main practice to share and translate ideas.Through the process based methodology, new concepts such as proportion, modules, scale, geometry, composition, rhythm and hierarchy became familiar tools to develop spatial and formal sensibility.

task #1. Design a public structure in existing Kiruna that remains when the rest of the city is moved.

response. Creases of Kiirunavaara

The proposed promenade in the to-become green area of old Kiruna invites us to a hide and seek game with Kiirunavaara (mining mountain). The path grows into three nodes (plateaus) for panoramic views, where external topography is imitated on the inside. It does this by creating an inner courtyard for collective gathering, sunken down to create a shelter from the harsh winds.

A secondary intention is to prolong a moment for transition, slowing down movement across the steep topography through fractured circulation. A future though is that it can act as a link between other structural elements around it in the green area.

task #2. Design a domestic space that challenges the social rules in Kiruna and triggers a new radical scenario in the city.

response. The Dog Barks. Translating care across scales.

A network of community dog parks to unite Kiruna during the move.

This proposal brings forward the topic of informal dialogue and gathering, radicalising it through the medium of dogs. “Dogs are inherently social beings” and help to create “positive inter-species reciprocity” Robert P. Wishart writes in Dogs in the North. If one in every five Kiruna residents cares for a dog as a family member, could the same emotional bond and energy collectively help strengthen people’s relationship to a city? The Dog Barks is a spatial exploration that aims to answer this question.
